Pyjama life

The prevalence of pyjamas, [in Shanghai] Guariglia explained to me, was due to both the extreme summer heat and the lack of plumbing. The area where most of the pictures were taken was one where many people had to use outdoor communal toilets and thus the boundaries of what was considered home expanded past people’s houses to the public bathrooms. Once that relaxation of the dress code became acceptable (starting around the 1980s) the perimeter for p.j.-wear just kept expanding until many people were wearing them day in day out.
[for a lot more pjs in Shanghai check out this link via Kottke]
At least their pjs are cute. Which reminds me of a 7azoora… Which “type” of people in Amman find it fashionable to wear pj pants with a dressy shirt?

I’ll print these pictures and show them to my neighbors whenever they complain about me walking in my boxers outside

lol .. hareega… tell me about it! I wear my PJs to the post office, to walmart, to the bank, to the gas station, etc… not a big deal! but anything is a big deal back home for some reason!
SO
who is going to answer il 7azoora?!

I agree - the fact that this topic would even make it to a blog for discussion is kinda funny. It is not something I would even notice. Now that I think about it, I do a lot in my PJs. Post office, groceries, car wash, bank, blockbuster trips, take-out, taking my dog for walks etc.
In college I went to most morning classes in PJs too because my dorm was really close to most of my classes.
The “type” of person who would do this?!
Normal, open-minded, relaxed, free. Unconscious about the views of a very uptight and judgmental society that trades comfort for what’s expected.
Precisely why I left.

Hmmm I got a bad cut on my ankle, and I’ve been going to work in slippers until the wound heals. I haven’t told anyone outside my department, so in the mean time I get a lot of raised eyebrows!

2i7im..
binnisbih lal 7azzzoora?
:)
it reminded me of a joke, in baghdad the fanciest neighvor is called “3ara9at il hindiyyah” y3ni nobody knows what that means but its not the point. so the joke says: feeh wa7id noori bitmasha bil 3ara9at labis pijama lesh?
al 3ashan innas yfakrooh min ahl il man6iqa :P
so maybe its that kind of people that would go out in west 3amman in their pjs wiht a shirt, to show that they are min ahl il 7ay y3ni :D i am sure its much more acceptable in east-amman neighbors to go out to do whatever you have to do in your pjs. so advice: if the social-dressing codes of west amman dont suit you, move to east amman, much closer than the US :D
