I Heart Yamli

I really suffer with the Arabic keyboard. I mean. What the heck is the “thein” “ذ” doing all the way in the frigging corner? I can never ever remember that it is there when I need it. Adding my voice to that of my fellow girlies, Yamli is like the awesomest, most useful thing EVER. It’s even more useful than blush when you’re sick, and you have no idea how useful that is. Alright, so the name isn’t that cool, but hey, I can now I can actually type Arabic as fast as I type English! :)

    I love your post Roba :)

    It’s great to hear that you also share my frustration when typing Arabic and that this frustration is gone when using Yamli :) …

    By the way the name Yamli comes from “إملاء”. So as the teacher used to do in “إملاء” the user can “يملي” his words, and the tool comes up with the right words and right orthography. Hope this makes the name a bit cooler :P …

    I agree that the today’s arabic keyboard is very bad. However, did you ever use one of the original Arabic Mac keyboards? the letters distribution was different, and it made much more sense. For some reason IBM adapted this weird arabic keyboard and made it standard. With time, even apple changed to using the IBM one.

    nice site, this Yamli, creative. thanks for sharing

    It is amazing how some websites (or technologies) seem to get good public press and some don’t.

    I say that because “onkosh.com” was a full-blown search engine (not a Google front) with that 3arabizy translation embedded that came out before Yamli, but yet nobody seems to talk about it much. http://www.onkosh.com/ar/b3/b3help_new.htm

    Eh, it would be nice for those launching web apps to study how can they generate a good buzz online. Obviously Yamli did something that Onkosh didn’t. … oh well.

    btw, ذ == ذال :-)

    I just started to write papers in Arabic and it takes me a ridiculous amount of time to find the right letters (and remember to use shift to get a period, otherwise all my sentences end in zein). This has made my nerd heart sooo happy! Shukran!

    For an alternative, check search.eiktub.com where you can google for Arabic phrases with an English keyboard.

    You can also download an Arabic notepad (text editor) to type Arabic using any keyboard here at www.eiktub.com
