Clockwise or anticlockwise?

Spinning lady

Ok, I swear I can see her jumping every few seconds and switching directions. Moose can only see her going clockwise. What about you?

Apparently, if you see her dancing clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa. You can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.

Left brain function are signified by a person who is: uses logic, detail oriented
facts rule, words and language, present and past, math and science, can comprehend, knowing, acknowledges, order/pattern perception, knows object name, reality based, forms strategies, practical, safe.

Right brain function are signified by a person who is: uses feeling, “big picture” oriented, imagination rules, symbols and images, present and future, philosophy & religion, can “get it” (i.e. meaning), believes, appreciates, spatial perception, knows object function, fantasy based, presents possibilities, impetuous, risk taking

According to Moose, the fact that I see her jumping and changing directions means that my brain signals are shortcircuted.

For a minute I saw her spinning CCW, but now I can’t see her but clockwise.

If you look for a while you will notice that when she is spinning counter clockwise she is standing on her right foot and when she spins clockwise she’s standing on her left.

She spins in both directions but the transision is somewhat subtle. The figure is drawn intentionally sillouetted, and that makes the point of transission hard to discern. But I see one then the other after 30 seconds or so. And it happens when her leg is pointing to the left of the image. :)
She’s somewhat atheletic and well endowed! :)

i looked at the shadow and it’s clockwise

She is definitely jumping ….I am very sure that SHE and her shadow are spinning anticlockwise. I hate the right brain and left brain tests…I am always in the middle…can’t be categorized completely under neither

    Alright,
When I look at the picture, she’s moving clockwise all the time. But when I move my eyes off the picture to read something, it starts moving counter clockwise.

Apparently, it’s a visual trick. I’m not sure how scientific it is to base the human tendencies on the way they view a moving object!

But hey’s she’s a shagfeh! I would love to meet her in real life :) I think THAT is the big picture :D

    October 14, 2007 @ 10:49 pm

You are right Roba … she is doing it both ways and the way I see it … it has nothing to do with the left or right sides of the brain .. it is a visual trick that has to do with timing the switch :)

Nice one though .. happy Eid to you and to Moose :)

Every time I started reading the paragraph right below the animation she changed directions..
Perhaps when I started reading one part of my brain came on and made me see her spin in the other direction.

    Either way, I like it

  20. tommy

    October 15, 2007 @ 8:25 am

If you can get it to spin only one way then try this: stare at it a for a few minutes, try to mentally visualize it rotating the other direction, and occasionally blink your eyes. Sometimes as you imagine what it would look like rotating the other way and you blink it will suddenly change its orientation. It may take a few minutes, especially the first time.

  21. tommy

    October 15, 2007 @ 8:28 am

My mind must go through stages. Earlier it rotated counterclockwise unless I focused. Now it is rotating clockwise until I concentrate on making it rotate the other way. I’m almost ambidextrous when it comes to writing. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

  22. tommy

    October 15, 2007 @ 8:34 am

It also helps to focus on the center line of her body as you imagine the orientation changing.

  24. nuha

    October 15, 2007 @ 11:19 am

both ways! she switches every few seconds..
if i wanted to focus it goes anticlockwise then clockwise..

  25. Helmi

    October 15, 2007 @ 12:08 pm

ok, all of u guys and gals… listen to me… here is the answer to this dilemma…

in fact she is not moving neither CW nor CCW! seriously!

this is meant to be a visual illusion, so she is more like swinging in a cunning direction to let u see her going either CW, CCW, or even as switching between them!

so I analyzed the GIF image, and afterwards I inserted longer delays between the motion frames, and instead of 3 seconds I made them 20 seconds… and finally, here is the slow version of this picture…

    have a nice day!

I could switch her direction in my mind easily, if she’s going clockwise, when going from 3 to 9, try thinking that she’s going from 9 to 3 instead, very simple.

Doubt this has anything to do with my brain.

  27. Layla

    October 15, 2007 @ 5:05 pm

This is too frustrating! I’ve passed ages trying to activate the left side of my brain, but she still spins CW. Even the slowed-down GIF doesn’t change. I am a lost cause… :-(

    October 15, 2007 @ 7:19 pm

First, I could only see the high beams, but that’s a different story.

The best way to control how you see this figure is by looking away from the screen while making sure you can still see the figure only at the corner of your eye. Then, you make note of the movement of the swinging leg from right to left, then from left to right, and in your head you make the decision of what direction you want to see her moving when you look back.

Then, you look back at the point she’s making the transition.

With this technique, I’m able to see her change direction in periods easily less than 10 seconds.

    October 15, 2007 @ 7:22 pm

Ok, less than 5 seconds now. But I think I’m cheating :p

    October 15, 2007 @ 8:52 pm

I did the slow down effect thing (as helmi described) and I could STILL see her go one direction when I focus, and the other when I look at the controls. Apparently, speed is not a factor

This is a good mind teaser Roba ..

I can actually see both, scroll down so that you can see only the feet, try to imagine how it moves either clockwise or anti-clockwise then scroll up and you will see what you wanted to see.

ok so for a moment i thought that this a program that actually switches the direction of her dancing kol shway, and its just the fact that you write all these things about brain parts and stuff that makes us beleive that this is somethign diferent people see diferently, you know? anyone can make that program its so easy. but then i called mom and made her watch with me, and it switched form CW to CCW to her while it was still CW to me! :O

now that is a program i cant make :D

and btw, for me it keeps changing, CW, CCW, everytime i look its diferent.

This is still confusing. Anyways I’ve edited this GIF using a GIF editor. It turns out that it flips the direction. I’ve made a post about this, since it wouldn’t fit here.

it’s an illusion, because she has no defining features it can be seen as going both clockwise and anti-clockwise. For example If i draw a bikini on her that would define the movement.

I can make it switch directions if I click-and-drag across the figure.
