Art 101- chalk talk 1

Kitsch

  • fancy shmancy definition: a German term that has been used to categorize art that is considered an inferior copy of an existing style. The term is also used more loosely in referring to any art that is pretentious or in bad taste, and also commercially produced items that are considered trite or crass.
  • robawy definition: (syn) heshek beshek, nawari, 7afartali, fala7la7, vulgar, tasteless. It is is the absolute denial of shit- I mean, when something is ugly, it is ugly, and people who are unaware of the existence of kitschiness are unable to deny that this or that is aesthetically shitty.

Visual examples from our much beloved Jordan(via Zeid Qadousi’s blog):

    I agree with you on the ugly, nawari… descriptions. But I must say, these decorations sure bring a lot of character. Character that I find appealing.

    But sometimes, kitsch is funky cool.

    Many examples come to mind.

    1. The Hula girl on a car’s dashboard.
    2. Furry dice on the rear view mirror.
    3. Thrift stores/Second Hand Clothing

    When I’m in Amman, I’ll go on a hunt for cool kitsch.

    PS Didn’t I say “kitsch” to you a few days ago?

    Salaam;

    Yah, sure, it’s all rather undeniably tacky. But that’s why I love it. It’s just so evocative of the human souls behind it and their attempt to get your attention and your business.

    And it’s rather unique. That remarkable level of kitsch exists in nowhere the same degree here in the US as it does there.
